Maruti Suzuki India

MSL -Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest automaker, saw single-digit sales growth in July. Total domestic passenger vehicle sales increased by 6% to 1,52,126 units, up from 1,42,850 units in the same period last year. The utility vehicle segment, which includes popular models such as the Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Jimny, and XL6, was the true star of the show. This segment experienced a remarkable two-fold increase, with sales reaching 62,049 units in July, up from 23,272 units the previous year.

With an impressive 46,620 units sold last month, Maruti Suzuki’s SUV sales volume dominated the market, accounting for 49.1% of total passenger vehicle sales. However, sales in the mini segment, which includes models such as the Alto and S-Presso, fell significantly, falling to 9,590 units in July 2022 from 20,333 units in July 2022. Similarly, sales of compact cars such as the Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, and Swift fell 21% to 67,102 units, down from 84,818 units the previous year.

Hyundai

Hyundai reported a marginal increase in domestic sales in July, with 50,701 units sold versus 50,500 units sold in the same month last year. This growth was attributed to the company’s strong SUV portfolio, which was bolstered by the addition of Exter to its lineup. Tarun Garg, Hyundai’s COO, expressed optimism for the upcoming festive season, predicting increased demand, particularly during Onam in Kerala. The company’s future performance will benefit from the resolution of semiconductor supply issues.

Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra

Tata Motors reported a slight increase in passenger vehicle dispatches last month, with 47,628 units sold. Meanwhile, Mahindra & Mahindra saw a 29% increase in passenger vehicle sales, increasing to 36,205 units from 28,053 units the previous year. Mahindra’s success has been largely attributed to its SUVs, with the XUV 700 tribe exceeding 1 lakh sales in just 20 months.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor and MG Moto

Toyota Kirloskar Motor sold 21,911 units in July, its best-ever monthly sales figure. MG Motor reported a 25% increase in retail sales last month, with 5,012 units sold versus 4,013 units in July 2022. The growing prominence of electric vehicles, which accounted for 34% of total sales, is an intriguing aspect of MG Motor’s performance.
