1976: The Birth of a Legend

The world witnessed the birth of the first-generation Honda Accord in 1976. It made its debut as a three-door hatchback with 68 horsepower and a wheelbase of 2,380 mm (93.7 in). This compact marvel hit the roads, weighing between 898 and 945 kg (1,980 and 2,083 lb).

Japanese market versions claimed 80 PS (59 kW) JIS (similar to SAE Gross), while European and other export markets received a model without emissions control equipment, claiming the same 80 PS (59 kW) but adhering to the stricter DIN norm. In response to Japan’s tightening emission regulations, the Accord’s engine was outfitted with Honda’s innovative CVCC technology.

The Accord stood out due to its small size and excellent fuel economy. It included cloth seats, a tachometer, intermittent wipers, and an AM/FM radio as standard equipment, which were unusual at the time. The LX hatchback debuted in 1978, with air conditioning, a digital clock, and power steering – a luxury for cars with engines under two liters.

2024 Honda Accord with Hybrid Powertrain Makes its Debut in Japan

Honda fans in Japan have reason to rejoice, as the 2024 Honda Accord, now in its eleventh generation, has arrived. Unlike its global counterparts, the Japanese Accord 2024 will only be available with a hybrid petrol engine paired with a CVT transmission.

Exterior

The exterior of the 2024 Honda Accord for the Japanese market mirrors the global model, but Honda has added some unique paint choices and 18-inch alloy wheels. Inside the cabin, notable changes and specific variations await Japanese buyers. Under the hood, this Accord boasts a 2.0L NA four-cylinder petrol engine coupled with two electric motors, forming Honda’s self-charging e:HEV system.

While Honda hasn’t officially revealed the power and torque figures for the Japanese market, it’s expected to deliver a strong performance similar to the Civic hybrid, with a maximum power output of 184 PS and a peak torque of 315 Nm. In international markets, however, the new-generation Honda Accord offers a variety of powertrain options, including regular petrol and PHEV options, to cater to a diverse customer base.

Features

The Experience Selection Dial, which replaces traditional climate controls on the center console in the Japanese-spec Accord, is one distinguishing feature. This dial allows drivers to personalize its functions, such as controlling lighting, temperature, audio, and other features. It elegantly displays an analog clock when not in use. The Chinese-market Accord already has a dial like this. The 2024 Honda Accord comes with a long list of features, including a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with built-in Google functionality, a 10.2-inch all-digital instrument console, an 11.5-inch heads-up display, and the Honda Sensing 360 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) suite, which makes its debut in Japan.

Honda offers the Sportsline and Touringline packages, which include new alloy wheels, distinctive bumpers, side sills, a lip spoiler, a rear diffuser, and other features.

Bookings for the 2024 Honda Accord with Hybrid Powertrain will begin in December, giving Japanese car enthusiasts the opportunity to own this stylish and technologically advanced hybrid sedan.
