Renault Duster Scores Only 3 Stars at Euro NCAP Crash Tests- Details

The third-generation Dacia Duster, soon to be branded as the Renault Duster in India, recently underwent Euro NCAP’s latest round of crash tests. The SUV achieved a 3-star safety rating, highlighting its strengths and areas for improvement in occupant and road user protection.

Launch Date and Market Positioning

The third-gen Dacia Duster, known for its ruggedness and affordability, is set to launch in India in 2025 under the Renault brand. This model aims to capture the budget-friendly SUV segment, appealing to buyers looking for a blend of functionality and cost-effectiveness.

Safety Ratings and Features

The Euro-spec Duster earned the following ratings in the Euro NCAP tests:

  • Adult Occupant Protection (AOP): 70%
  • Child Occupant Protection (COP): 84%
  • Safety Assist Systems: 57%
  • Vulnerable Road Users (VRU): 60%

Key Safety Features

  • Six Airbags: Ensuring comprehensive protection in case of a collision.
  • ADAS Features: Including autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and lane support systems.
  • Seatbelt Reminder: Equipped for front seats, although lacking an occupant detection system in the rear seats.

Body Shell and Occupant Protection

The Duster’s body shell was rated as stable in the frontal offset test. While the knees and femurs of both the driver and passenger showed good protection, the driver’s chest protection was deemed weak. In the full-width rigid barrier test, chest protection was rated as marginal for both the driver and rear passenger. However, the side barrier and side pole impact tests showed good protection for all critical body areas, with the Duster scoring maximum points in this category.

Child Occupant Protection

The Duster provided good protection for child dummies in frontal-offset and side barrier impacts, apart from the neck of the 10-year dummy in the frontal test, which was rated as adequate. The front passenger airbag can be disabled for a rearward-facing child restraint, although there is no child presence detection system.

Safety Assist Systems

The AEB system performed adequately against other vehicles, but the lack of a rear seat occupant detection system affected the scoring for seatbelt reminders. The lane support system offers gentle corrections and intervenes in critical situations to ensure the vehicle stays on its path.

Vulnerable Road Users

Protection for the head of a struck pedestrian or cyclist was generally good or adequate, though poor results were recorded on the stiff windscreen pillars and along the base of the screen. Pelvis protection was poor at all test locations, resulting in no points. The AEB system’s response to pedestrians was adequate, while its response to cyclists was good.
