Exterior Design

This recall does not involve any changes to the exterior design of the affected BMW SUVs. The problem is with the interior cargo rails, which can detach in a crash.

Interior Features

The main issue is with the interior cargo rails in the affected BMW X3 SUVs. These rails can detach during a crash, which can increase the risk of injury to passengers. BMW will replace the rear cargo rail bolts to ensure they stay attached during a crash.

The recall covers the following BMW X3 models from 2018 to 2023:

  • X3 sDrive30i
  • X3 xDrive30i
  • X3 M40i

Safety Concerns

BMW discovered the problem in August 2022 after an extreme rear crash involving a 2022 BMW X3. Legal documents were served in March 2023, allowing BMW to inspect the SUV and identify the issue. It is important to address this problem to ensure passenger safety.

Repair and Notification

BMW dealers will replace the rear cargo rail attachment bolts for free. Owners of the affected vehicles will receive notification letters starting August 30, 2023. For more information, owners can contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Additional Recalls

BMW is also recalling 1,145 vehicles due to a potential airbag explosion issue. This recall affects various models from 2013 to 2015. The driver’s airbag inflator may explode during deployment because of a manufacturing defect. This defect can cause sharp metal fragments to strike the driver or passengers, increasing the risk of injury or death. BMW will replace the driver’s front airbag for free, with notification letters expected by September 2, 2023.
